Today, this is one of the oldest working satellite communication sets in the world joining together 20 advanced terrestrial satellite communications stations with the antenna diameter from 2.5 to 25 meters operating in С, Ku and L bands. SCS Vladimir’s infrastructure is used to arrange satellite communications and broadcasting channels, redundancy, control and operation of spacecraft, conducting orbital measurements and monitoring L-band transponders.
Space communications station Azimut-M (later Space Communications Center Vladimir, today Satellite Communications Station (SCS) Vladimir) was put into operation by the Order of the Minister of Communications of the USSR in 1971. The key tasks of the station were to enable transmitting the television program of the Central Television in the Orbita system and long-distance telephone channels to the Far East and to arrange telephone channels with Kuba.
In 1976, as part of the Station, equipment was deployed to work via the new direct broadcasting satellite Ekran. With its help, it became possible to transmit the television program to the network of receiving stations in remote localities of Siberia and Far North. In 1980, the communications equipment of Vladimir Station was used for television broadcasts of Moscow Summer Olympics to the countries of the Indian region.
In 1995, command and measurement complex Kashtan was launched at Vladimir Station to provide control, exchange of telemetry and command information with the space modules of Express-A, Express-AM and Sesat series. In 1999, the land satellite communications station of OJSC Rostelecom was installed at SCC Vladimir, it operated via communication satellite LMI-1 (75°E) and performed the functions of the central station of the company’s network. When the RSCC participated in the Federal Special-Purpose Program “Development of the Television and Radio Broadcasting Service in the Russian Federation in 2009–2018”, the equipment of SCS Vladimir was deployed for arranging the broadcast of Russia-wide programs to the Far East and Siberia.During the period from 2009 to 2015, the RSCC updated the infrastructure of Vladimir Station, including the telecommunications equipment, water, heat and electricity supply systems. That improved the reliability of its operation and optimized the facility’s operating expenses.Today, satellite communications station Vladimir is successfully working as the telecommunications port for providing the satellite communications services in С, Кu and L banks, supports the work of telephone communication channels, television and radio broadcasting channels, mobile government communications via the RSCC’s space modules in the slot from 20°W to 103°E. Using the command and measurement station Vladimir, operation, telemetric control and measurement of orbit characteristics are provided for satellites of Express-A and Express-AM series. In addition to performing government responsibilities, SCC Vladimir is actively implementing the current telecommunications projects, successfully collaborating with Russian and international companies. Its partners include the Intersputnik International Organization of Space Communications, LLC Isatel, OJSC Rosteleco etc.
